The National Eisteddfod of Wales was held in Barry in August 1968 with singers from Barry and district coming together under the baton of Clifford Bunford to form The Eisteddfod Choir. Following the Eisteddfod, Clifford set up a choral group with members of the Eisteddfod Choir and Barry Choral Society was born.
In 2015 we decided to rebrand ourselves and have renamed our choir The Barry Community Choir. With 50 years of vocals not far over the horizon our choir has been an instrument for delivering superb music and we are very much committed to performing a wide range of song to the community of Barry.
It has been proved over and over again that singing is good for you and that the benefits of belonging to a good social group are long and far-reaching. With this in mind, if you would like to meet new people, make new friends, improve your health, and widen your horizon and SING! We would love to meet you.
Don’t just take our word for it – come along on any Wednesday night to the Crossway Methodist Church in Court Road, Barry – from 7.30 to 9.30 and try us out! We can promise you a warm welcome, NO AUDITIONS and good contemporary music. You do not have to be able to read music to join us – so don’t let that put you off taking the first step.
If you already sing then you obviously appreciate the benefits of singing. We, as a Choir, are always looking for ways to foster and promote local talent. We can provide the “platform” for you to perform on.
On the first Wednesday of every month we hold a coffee evening where we extend the normal break to half an hour and enjoy a chat over a cup of tea or coffee – and a biscuit or two! On this night we also hold a raffle to help supplement funds.
Our professional people are Emma Arscott, Conductor and local Barry “star,” who recently returned to us after giving birth to son Thomas. Sian Davies is our Accompanist, who has played for celebrities far and wide.
We usually have two local concerts a year (Spring/Summer and Christmas) and also sing in the community. Last year (2014) as well as singing in Barry High Street and The 3 Choirs of Barry Concert at St Mary’s Church, we also sang in Ferndale and Cardiff.
This year, our first event was a Musical Workshop which was open to everyone. It was held at Crossway Church, Barry on Saturday, 23rd May. The workshop was taken by Kate Woolveridge, well known throughout the UK for her workshops which are run with equal amounts of fun and music!
Whichever way you choose to “sample” the Choir, you will be welcome. If the thought of stepping through a new door is putting you off, just email firstname.lastname@example.org or ring 01446 748724 for an informal chat.
